I’m Leila, NHS midwife and founder of @wearemothr, an upcoming pregnancy and postpartum education platform. Mothr isn’t just about teaching you the science of pregnancy, or the ‘how to’ of labour and birth. It’s about teaching women how to actually navigate maternity services in the UK. Because not knowing what a contraction feels like isn’t what’s failing our Black and Brown women. It’s not understanding the system they’re walking into. It’s not knowing how NHS policies and guidelines shape the care they’re offered. It’s not knowing what questions to ask, what they’re entitled to, or how to confidently navigate those conversations with their maternity team. I want women to understand the BTS of the NHS so they can enter maternity care informed, prepared and able to advocate for themselves.

I run What Are Friends For, where I interview people who aren’t necessarily in the social-media spotlight but are successful in their own fields, from childcare and writing to creative careers and grant-funded projects. The idea is to show that success looks different for everyone and that different paths can still lead somewhere meaningful. Alongside that, I’m also developing my own ready-to-drink cocktail brand. @whatarefriendsfour @whatarefriendsfour
