Why I built this

He asked thousands of strangers to introduce themselves in one comment section. Thousands of them did.

They wrote out their skills, their businesses, what they’re building, in their own words, to nobody in particular.

I was genuinely inspired going through them. A whole network of people on missions, all reaching for each other, buried in a comment section where nobody can actually connect.

So I made a directory. Their own words, searchable, each card linking back to their Instagram. A better way for them to find each other.

8,124 comments read. 7,489 of them were somebody introducing what they do. The rest were shout-outs and praise.

The directory

Hi, I’m Ashanti 👋🏽 I’m currently writing my first fiction novel, while working in client partnerships in Tech by trade. I’d love to connect with people in the publishing industry- particularly editors and literary agents, as I’m hoping to take the next step towards getting my novel published. If you’re in publishing, or know someone who might be a great connection, I’d be very happy to connect! ✨

Hi, I’m Lucy, founder and lead designer at Zimrah House Publishing. We help first-time and self-published authors transform completed manuscripts into professionally designed, publication-ready books. With more than 20 years of experience in graphic design and typography, I now bring that expertise to book covers, interior design and publishing guidance. I’d love to connect with authors, coaches, speakers and professionals who have a story or expertise they’re ready to publish.

Hi everyone 👋🏾 I’m Sherisse, a writer and creative based in London. I’m building Margin & Type, a creative platform focused on storytelling, culture and voices that don’t always get enough room in traditional publishing/media, and I also write Backchat Griot (over on substack) where I explore Black British identity, Caribbean heritage, womanhood, belonging, language and culture. I’m currently writing across essays, children’s books and a few other slightly-too-many creative ideas 😂, with a particular interest in Black British and Caribbean stories and better representation within publishing. I’d especially love to connect with Black writers, editors, publishers, agents, illustrators, designers, podcasters, researchers and other creatives working around culture, identity, heritage and storytelling. Also very specifically looking for a brilliant children’s book illustrator at the moment, particularly someone comfortable illustrating Black characters, and contemporary Black life. More generally, I’m keen to meet people interested in collaborating on essays, interviews, podcasts, books, events and creative projects. Basically, if your work sits somewhere around Black stories, culture, publishing or interesting ideas, come and say hello. I want to know what you’re building too 👋🏾
